The 2023 Asian Cup debacle of the South Korean national football team has uncovered a shocking lack of professionalism and discipline among the players and the coach. Star players Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-In had a physical altercation over playing table tennis the night before the crucial semi-final match against Jordan, resulting in Son injuring his finger and playing with a bandage.
This is a gross violation of professional sportsmanship, as it shows a disregard for the team’s performance and the fans’ expectations. Playing another sport on the eve of a crucial match and in the middle of a tournament is not only a distraction, but also a risk of injury that could – and that evidently jeopardized the team’s chances of winning.
The coach, Jürgen Klinsmann, should have prevented this from happening and enforced a strict curfew and a code of conduct for the players. Instead, he failed to control the situation and take responsibility for the team’s dismal performance.
The players and the coach must face disciplinary action from the Korean Football Association and apologize to the fans and the nation for their reckless behavior and disappointing results.
Laying blame on Lee Kang-In is trivial. Ousting him for causing a rift within the team is inconsequential. It needs no emphasis that Son’s resentment towards his ping pong opponent, if any, is frivolous and aligns with self-sabotage. What we see here is a managerial problem. This is a manager who has failed to communicate the significance of events involving the national team representation to his subordinates. As such, a table tennis match on the eve of a cup semi-final presents an irresistible dilemma enough to forego a Jordanian elimination.
It is not surprising that a management aiming for a Cup tournament would observe a planned schedule to ensure unity, consistency, and less distraction throughout the tournament. Instead, we witnessed a football powerhouse crippled with negligence facilitate another successful Qatari defense title and give new meaning to a Jordanian thrash.
